Ian MacKaye is an American musician from Washington, D.C. He's a key figure in the development of hardcore punk and his commitment to indie music and DIY ethics has made him a respected figure in the music industry.
Active since 1979, MacKaye is best known as the co-founder and owner of Dischord Records, a Washington, D.C.-based indie record label. He was the frontman of hardcore punk band Minor Threat and post-hardcore band Fugazi, formed in 1987 with Brendan Canty, Joe Lally, and Guy Picciotto.
MacKaye has also been involved with various other bands, including:
- Teen Idles
- Embrace
- Pailhead (a collaboration with Ministry)
- The Evens (a two-piece indie rock group with his wife Amy Farina)
- Coriky (formed in 2018 with Amy Farina and Fugazi bandmate Joe Lally)
MacKaye has produced releases by notable bands such as Q and Not U, John Frusciante, 7 Seconds, Nation of Ulysses, Bikini Kill, Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, and Rollins Band.
